Students Win Chemistry Awards

Periodic table contest award winners

Sophomores Anastasia Biesecker, Thalia Lisowski and Ella Herr (L-R) won awards for their designs representing elements on the periodic table.

Nov. 13, 2019 -- Three Heights High sophomores in Brian Schaner’s Honors Chemistry class won awards in the Year of the Periodic Table of the Elements celebration sponsored by the Kelvin Smith Library at Case Western Reserve University.

Anastasia Biesecker received the Judge's Pick for her interpretation of the element Silica (Si).  Ella Herr received the Best Fact Sheet award for her piece representing Helium (He) and Thalia Lisowski received the Most Creative award for her piece that represented Xenon (Xe).

The competition was in honor of the International Year of the Periodic Table of the Elements, designated by the United Nations General Assembly and UNESCO.

This year marks the 150th anniversary of the first publication of the periodic table in 1869 by Dmitri Mendeleev. At the time there were 63 known elements and now there are 118. but Mendeleev accurately predicted the characteristics of several elements that were undiscovered at the time and left gaps for them in his table.
