Engineering Students Design Automated Guided Vehicles

Engineering class

Nov. 12, 2019 -- Students in Cassie Budin’s eighth-period class worked in small groups to design, build and program an Automated Guided Vehicle, AGV. Mrs. Budin teaches Computer Integrated Manufacturing, the fourth level engineering class offered at Heights High School.

Students in this class learn the engineering behind manufacturing and how to use different machines and robots that are used to create products in mass production. Students learn from trial and error because it can take many tries to get their design right. Students are given the chance to let their creative juices flow in this class.

The AGV units were programmed to follow a black line on the classroom floor and to stop and turn at different points on the course. The students used the computers to program these vehicles and built the actual vehicles with resources from the classroom.

AGVs are used in several industries, including distribution centers, warehouses, and manufacturing facilities.
