PreK-12 Academic Plan in the Event of a Teacher Strike

November 27, 2020

Dear CH-UH Families,

The Cleveland Heights Teachers Union has notified the District of its intent to strike beginning on Wednesday, December 2. We are writing to provide you with the academic plan for all students in grades PreK-12 in the event that teachers do decide to strike. We do not know how long a strike could potentially last and are committed to working collaboratively with the union to avoid this action.

Students in grades K-2 will use the Superkids Videos and their Edmentum Exact Path for daily instruction. Students in grades 3-8 will use Edmentum Exact Path for Math and ELA instruction and will use Study Island for practice in science and social studies. Students in grades 9-12 will use Edgenuity, as well as other resources detailed in the calendar below. More specific information regarding how to access materials on these platforms will be shared prior to December 2.

Students with disabilities, except for our MD/AU students who receive services in a self-contained special education classroom, will follow the same academic plan as their general education peers. We have reached out to the families of students with disabilities separately with additional details. We will send information about Gifted services next week.

To support fine arts courses, students can select an activity from the Student and Wellness Choice Boards and the Daily Reading Log (K-12).

Substitute teachers will support students with their assigned coursework. These substitute teachers, just like the substitutes we work with on a regular basis, are certified substitutes and have received appropriate training and background checks.

The documents linked below contain grade-specific information, including learning resources, sample daily schedules and the information about daily attendance.

Ohio Online
Students that have been previously enrolled in Ohio Online will continue to use their current online learning platform through January 15. Students will be contacted via email with instructions on how to access their substitute teacher for Ohio Online.

Substitute teachers will support students with their assigned coursework in Ohio Online. These substitute teachers, just like the substitutes we work with on a regular basis, are certified substitutes and have received appropriate training and background checks. Please contact Bob Swaggard, CH-UH Director of Curriculum & Instruction, with questions at [email protected].

Attendance
According to Ohio law and CH-UH Board of Education policy, attendance is required of all students enrolled during the day and hours that school is in session. Attendance will be taken daily during the required check-in times outlined in the schedule.

Grading
In remote learning, grades will be based on completion of assignments, evidence of participation, logins, and interactions with teachers and class. All assignments provided during the strike will be factored into Quarter 2 grades in addition to the work that students have completed prior to December 2.

Thank you for your patience and understanding as we navigate this difficult process together. We hope that we can resolve this situation and avoid a strike. We will continue to adjust this plan as needed. For questions about the academic plan, please contact your child’s school principal.

Sincerely,

Superintendent Elizabeth Kirby
