Roxboro Elementary Celebrates "Start With Hello" Week

Oct. 19, 2020 -- Roxboro Elementary had an amazing week celebrating "Start With Hello!" on October 12-16, 2020. Start With Hello Week was established by the Sandy Hook Promise foundation to raise awareness and educate students on how to reduce social isolation and create a more connected and inclusive school and community overall. This is more important now than ever due to the fact that we can’t be physically together.

Last Monday, the Roxboro Elementary staff and students were encouraged to wear green, the official color of Start With Hello Week. Students got a chance to watch a video where they learned how to say “hello” in many different languages. Tuesday’s theme was “Start Talking.” Students were asked to wear a shirt that is unique to them and were given the opportunity to ask each other questions about their shirt in a special lunch facilitated by Mrs. Coyne.

On Wednesday, students decked themselves out in neon clothing for "Neon Day." Thursday was “Kindness Rox” where students were encouraged to participate in random acts of kindness and share their acts of kindness with Mrs. Coyne. Friday's theme was “Nothing beats our Team Kindness!” Since Rox El students and staff consider themselves a “team,” students were asked to wear their favorite sports gear and spread positivity by writing positive messages and emails to their teammates. Students were also encouraged to pen positive messages to their family members at home.

Ella Hollis, Grade 2, wore a special shirt on Tuesday that was unique to her. When asked about her shirt she said: “I got my shirt in Florida and it’s special because we usually go there and I can’t go there now because of the virus and I miss it.” Her classmates asked what part of Florida she visited. On Friday, Ella spread positivity by making a poster that reads "Happy go lucky."
