Board Votes to Keep District in Remote Status Until at Least 11/16

Oct. 21, 2020 -- The CH-UH Board of Education voted yesterday to continue the 2020-2021 school year in a remote status until at least November 16.

The motion was passed during the October 20 work session following a presentation from Superintendent Kirby and the administrative team. The District will continue to offer in-person services to students with low-incidence disabilities, with the option to move remote if their parents/guardians choose to do so.

This comes after the announcement on October 15 that Cuyahoga County is back in Level 3 “red” alert level status in the Ohio Public Health Advisory System. After weighing options and the recommendations from the Cuyahoga County Board of Health to implement remote learning in a Level 3, Superintendent Kirby announced her decision to recommend to the Board that the District begins the second quarter in remote learning, the instructional model currently in place.

Superintendent Kirby said in the meantime, District planning committees will continue to meet to discuss next steps. The committees, which include staff, parents, teachers, and administrators, had been working over the last several weeks to develop draft plans for Quarter 2, which included hybrid learning models.

“I want to get more trend data on [COVID-19] levels in the county, and I also want to make sure our committees have enough time to plot out their next steps. They had a draft timeline that they were examining and considering prior to this turn of events, but we need to consider all of the information we have at this time,” Superintendent Kirby said.

The Board of Education plans to meet again within the next two weeks to receive further updates from Superintendent Kirby and District leaders.

The second quarter begins Monday, November 2.
