Feb. 18, 2025 -- If you have seen them, then you already know. The Heights High Barbershoppers are outstanding, audience favorites. And now, it’s official!
The Men’s and Women’s Barbershopper vocal music groups received ratings of ‘Outstanding’ at the Barbershop Harmony Society International Festival in San Antonio Texas on January 30 - February 1.
The Women’s Barbershoppers had an especially successful year, accomplishing a first in the ensemble’s history of attending the festival – the highly revered “Audience Favorite." They were named the champions in their ensemble size category were the runner-ups amongst all of the women’s high school ensembles that performed.
“This year’s trip to the Barbershop Harmony Society Midwinter Conference was the most successful to date,” said director, Jesse Lange. “Both the Men’s and Women’s Barbershoppers achieved ratings higher than any previous year.”
The convention drew top notch Barbershop groups of many ages - adults, college singers and other high school groups from all over the globe. For high school attendees, it offers exposure to seasoned and award winning singers who can offer valuable feedback and both formal and informal instruction.
The possible ratings are Good, Excellent, Outstanding or Superior and are awarded by a panel of international vocal experts.
“Our students made our community proud by conducting themselves with poise and professionalism,” said Mr. Lange, “while absolutely stunning the audience with their energy, musicality, and talent.”
Barbershop music is unaccompanied (acapella) vocal music with four-part harmony.
The boys performed the following songs: That Old Black Magic, I Only Want to Be With You, and Ebb Tide.
The girls performed the following songs: Ac-cent-tchu-ate the Positive, Devoted to You, and Turn the Beat Around.
The Barbershoppers will perform at the Vocal Music Department’s Midwinter Concert this Friday, February 21 at 7:00 p.m. in the Heights High Auditorium. There is no cost for admission.
