Oct. 10, 2024 -- Heights High School Seniors Remy Bourbeau, William Larkin, and Gus Szpak have been named National Merit Scholars.
Gus and Remy are Merit Scholar Semifinalists in the 2025 competition and have the opportunity to advance to the Finalist level and qualify for the National Merit Scholarship. 16,000 Semifinalists were recognized nationally, representing less than 1% of U.S. high school students.
William Larkin is a Commended Student, placing among the top 5% of the students who entered the competition but will not continue in the competition for National Merit Scholarship awards.
About 34,000 Commended Students are recognized nationwide for their exceptional academic promise.
More than 1.3 million students entered the competition by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test in the fall of their junior year.
“We are extremely proud of Gus, Remy, and William for this immense achievement. It is no easy feat in becoming a National Merit Scholarship Semifinalist or a Commended Student. I know that they will continue to make Tiger Nation proud well beyond their time here at Heights,” said Superintendent Elizabeth Kirby.
Gus and Remy have the opportunity to advance to the Finalist level and qualify for the National Merit Scholarship. In February 2025, the National Merit Scholarship Program will notify principals of their Semifinalists who have advanced to the Finalist level.
The students will be invited to be recognized for their achievements by the Board of Education and Superintendent Kirby during the Board’s monthly regular meeting on November 5.
