Canterbury's IB Program Receives Commendations

Apr. 15, 2021 -- Once a school receives International Baccalaureate authorization from the governing body, they expect an in-person visit every five years. A team of IB experts will walk their hallways, pop in and out of classrooms, interview teachers, students and parents, and ensure that the school is indeed adhering to IB principles.

Of course, that can’t happen if your school building isn't physically open. But that didn't stop Canterbury Elementary from having an evaluation unlike any that Melissa Garcar, IB Coordinator for three of the district’s buildings, had ever prepared for.

Over two days in the middle of January, the IB team “visited” Canterbury School but only through their computer screens. They popped in and out of Google Meets, reviewed communications from the school to families, conducted interviews with teachers and staff, and ensured that the building was engaging in inquiry-based, globally-focused instruction even if that instruction was being offered remotely.

The results, received in an official report on February 25, were impressive with Canterbury receiving nine commendations for work extremely well done. School leaders were recognized for effectively sharing their passion of the IB Primary Years Programme, while teachers were commended for the admittedly hard task of “promoting an inquiry-based, constructivist approach through pandemic virtual learning.”

The report also contained recommendations for further strengthening Canterbury’s commitment to IB over the next five years, including revising its mission statement to be more globally-focused and ensuring that their IB unit build in adequate time for students to take meaningful action on community issues.

Principal Dr. Erica Wigton was “so pleased that Canterbury was recognized for the positive and warm student interactions with teachers and staff and the high level of inquiry instruction occurring in the classrooms.  It is a testament of our special community composed of Canterbury families, students, and staff.”
