Board of Education Meeting Summary - February 1, 2022

Feb. 2, 2022 -- At the monthly regular meeting Board of Education meeting on February 1, the BOE and Superintendent Liz Kirby recognized students and staff for recent achievements, and members of the Shaker Heights Board of Education and the Ohio School Boards Association joined the meeting for a discussion.

Awards & Recognitions
The Board and Superintendent Kirby recognized the winners of the East View United Church of Christ 32nd Annual MLK Essay Contest, all of whom are eighth grade students at Roxboro Middle School. The students, Henry Dyck (1st place), Gabriel Mallamad (2nd place) and Meghan Marshall (3rd place) read their essays aloud at the meeting.

From contact tracing to test distribution, in addition to their many everyday duties, the CH-UH school nursing team goes above and beyond to help keep the school community safe and healthy. The Board and Superintendent Kirby recognized the team for their efforts. Members of the nursing team are: Veronica Adams, Christine Bell, Marianne Cook, Denise Davis, Laura Delambo, Marilyn Doss, Jacqueline Harris, Lisa Johnson, Lia Long, Lena Mccoy, Zhalecia Motley, Bertha Pickett, Margie Rossander, Linda Rudy, Betsy Salem, Debra Scotese, Andrea Smith, Susan Tate, Roseann Varcelli, and Taylor Ware.

CH-UH is one of eight school districts in Ohio to receive this year’s Auditor of State Award with Distinction. The award is given to local governments and school districts upon the completion of a clean financial audit. The award was presented to CFO/Treasurer Scott Gainer and Assistant Treasurer Eric Soltis by Jake Altman, the Northeast Regional Liaison to the Auditor of State.

OSBA/Shaker Heights Discussion
The Shaker Heights Board of Education joined the meeting to speak with representatives from the Ohio School Boards Association about the association’s decision last fall to withdraw from the National School Boards Association. CEO Rick Lewis and President Robert Heard were on hand to speak with the Boards of Education and answer questions.

Superintendent’s Report
Superintendent Kirby delivered an update on January happenings within each of the five strategic plan goals. Additionally, the Board voted to authorize the District’s membership in the Ohio High School Athletic Association for the 2022-2023 school year.
