Action Needed Regarding State Board Resolution

(Updated Sept. 23, 2022) -- At the Ohio Board of Education meeting on Tuesday, September 20, Board Member Brendan Shea presented an anti-LGBTQ+ resolution for consideration.

The “Resolution to Support Parents, Schools, and Districts in Rejecting Harmful, Coercive, and Burdensome Gender Identity Policies'' attempts to invalidate federal Title IX protections in schools for LGBTQ+ youth. The resolution contradicts Cleveland Heights-University Heights school board policy.

CH-UH Board Policy 5517 explicitly states "[t]he Board will vigorously enforce its prohibition against discriminatory harassment based on race, color, national origin, sex (including sexual orientation and gender identity), disability, age (except as authorized by law), religion, ancestry, or genetic information (collectively, "Protected Classes") that are protected by Federal civil rights laws (hereinafter referred to as unlawful harassment), and encourages those within the School District community as well as Third Parties, who feel aggrieved to seek assistance to rectify such problems."

According to Cleveland.com, the state board will vote on the resolution on October 11-12. Community members can email written comments regarding the resolution to [email protected] and [email protected], or contact State Board members here.
