CH-UH Celebrates GEAR UP Week, September 26-30

Sep. 27, 2022 -- The CH-UH City School District is celebrating National GEAR UP Week, September 26-30, 2022. The GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness) initiative focuses on increasing the college and career readiness in students. Elementary and middle schools are celebrating the week following the scheduled activities below:  

Activities for Grades K-5

Monday - Schools Closed

Tuesday - Career and Community Focus

This day celebrates all the wonderful people who make up the local and school communities. (ex. Teachers, custodians, lunch and recess aides, local business owners, etc.)

Wednesday - Parent and Family Focus

This day is to specifically focus on parents and families and their role in supporting college and career readiness. Students are invited to interview their parents or family  members about their path to college and career. Here are some sample prompts for students to use for their interview:

-What advice related to college and career readiness would you share?
-What information about college and career do you wish someone shared with you when you were my age?
-What career field(s)were you interested in when you were my age?
-What experiences helped you land on your current career?

Thursday - Throwback Thursday

CH-UH staff will share pictures from when they were in college and talk about where the
college is located, profile what the college is like, and why you chose to go there.

Friday - Friday Fun Day

This day is about students creating their vision for their future and participating in activities that help students see themselves on a journey for college and career readiness.


Activities for Grades 6-8
 
Monday - Schools Closed
 
Tuesday - Dream Board Wall

Students will think about their future aspirations, goals, interests, and write them down on provided paper. They will also have the opportunity to be as creative as they would like. (Roxboro)

Students will have the opportunity to create their Dream Board with advisors (Monticello) 

Wednesday - Letter to My Future Self

Students will write an electronic letter to their future selves.

Thursday - Celebrating College and Career (Day 1)

Students will participate in an online College and Career scavenger hunt. (Monticello)

Celebrate with a scoop of ice cream for lunch. (Roxboro)

Friday - Celebrating College and Career (Day 2)

Students will participate in an online College and Career scavenger hunt. (Roxboro)

Celebrate with a scoop of ice cream for lunch. (Monticello)
