Barbershoppers Win Awards at National Competition

February 15, 2020 -- The Heights High Men’s and Women’s Barbershoppers won two awards at the Barbershop Harmony Society Midwinter Convention in Jacksonville Florida on January 8-12.

The men won the Presenters Award and the women won the Next Generation Junior Chorus Award Plateau A.

And, the groups were selected to be featured in a Next Generation video about the power of vocal music that was shown at the conference. The Heights students were also selected to sing for the Donors Dinner.

“This conference was super successful for us,” said Vocal Music Director Jesse Lange. “We won several awards, sang with multi-generation groups, and learned from some of the best directors and barbershop singers in the country.”

The instruction included several master classes with leading barbershop instructors, valuable feedback from judges, and a lecture recital. The students performed for multiple judges and audiences and sang with other groups, even as a part of a 900 member mass chorus of middle and high school students performing with the historic singing group the Four Freshman.

Many of the performances were in the historic Florida Theater in downtown Jacksonville.

The Heights High barbershoppers and the rest of the Vocal Music Department will perform in concert on February 27, 7:00 p.m. in the school Auditorium.
