Oct. 10, 2017 -- Canterbury students learned about the science of electricity - by creating it themselves!
As part of the District’s Green Apple Project through the Brewer-Garrett Company, students used an “energy bike” to generate electricity and power 3 common types of light bulbs: incandescent, compact fluorescent and LED. During their Creative Arts time, a few students from each grade pedaled the bicycle to get power to the lights, and learned how much less energy was needed to power LED bulbs than incandescents.
Canterbury’s Creative Arts Team - teachers Julie Lustic (physical education), Ida Bergson (art), Karly Bowman (music) and Jessica Artman (Spanish) - is using the theme “Think Globally, Act Locally” this year. They meet with each grade level every Friday to work on sustainability projects.
The team spearheaded lunchroom recycling of milk cartons and juice boxes. With cooperation from the lunchroom staff and the custodian, the students are recycling several bins a week full of these items. This is the second such program in the district, having been started at Roxboro Elementary School last year.
