Marketing Program Partners with AT&T

The Heights High Marketing Class and their student organization, DECA, received a grant from AT&T to prepare for and compete in state and national entrepreneurial competitions.

The goal of the project is to prepare students for college and careers. The project leverages the skills and knowledge of AT&T’s workforce and connects learning to the real world.

One of the first activities for the students was held on October 22 at the AT&T administrative facility in Brecksville. Students attended morning presentations about career skills and toured the facility.

One of the workshops focused on effective communication skills needed in a work place environment. Members of the AT&T sales staff led the sessions and discussed the different kinds of communication styles needed for work, peer and family situations.

“The students enjoyed the workshops and seeing the AT&T facility,” said Marketing teacher Sarah Parker. In the afternoon, students enjoyed an AT&T provided lunch at the Creekside Restaurant in Brecksville where the students practiced their business lunch etiquette.

During this school year, AT&T employees will visit the classroom for more work place instruction and discussion. On November 9, students and AT&T employees will volunteer at the Cleveland Food Bank.

The grant funds will also pay for a subscription to Nepris, an interactive web based program that connects students with business professionals live on a SmartBoard.

The grant is for nearly $430,000 and includes one other school in Ohio, Akron North and schools in 12 national markets in the US.

The grant is part of AT&T’s Aspire project, an education initiative focused on high school success and career readiness. The program engages AT&T’s network, mobile and cloud technologies, its employees and its partners to make an impact on learning.

The Marketing class is part of the Career and Technical Education program at Heights High.
