Nov. 2, 2015 --
The Cleveland Heights-University Heights City School District is kicking off its annual partnership with the American Heart Association to promote heart healthy lifestyles to staff, students and the school community and to raise funds to support the mission of the AHA.

In the 2014-2015 school year, the District schools raised a total of $14,645 to fight heart disease and stroke.

Our goal for the 2015-2016 year is to engage more staff, more students and more families to learn about heart healthy living and to make an impact on our community’s future health! By holding a heart event in every school in the District we plan to have our Best Year Ever and have set a Heart Goal of $22,000!

WHY: Studies show that students who are physically fit do better academically! Unfortunately, heart disease remains the No. 1 killer of Americans and with the growing childhood obesity epidemic heart disease is already affecting many of our children. Our Heart Campaign promotes the importance of exercise, good nutrition, and living tobacco free. It provides heart health education to learn more about a heart healthy lifestyle. We’ll raise awareness and funds to help the American Heart Association continue vital research leading to the latest treatments for cardiovascular diseases and stroke and make a difference in our own community.

HOW: The District will be engaged in heart healthy education, events and activities year-round:

  • Kick-off Assemblies at each school presented by AHA staff
  • Elementary Schools: Jump Rope for Heart
  • Middle Schools: Hoops for Heart
  • High School: Red Out or other event
  • District Staff: Monthly “Wellness Wednesday” heart tips
  • District: Fit Friendly School District

2014-15 American Heart Association Event Results:

  • Roxboro Elementary (Vince Nemeth) - $10,500
  • Gearity PDS (Fiona Connor-Kuntz) - $3,075
  • Fairfax Elementary (Alice Stratton) - $1,070

Money raised goes toward lifesaving heart research and educational programs in our area. For every $1 raised, approximately $3 comes back to our region
