District Goes Red For American Heart Month
Feb. 6, 2017 -- The Cleveland Heights-University Heights City School District is showing support for the American Heart Association this February through fundraisers and Go Red Fridays.

Staff at the Board of Education are wearing red "Life Is Why" t-shirts each Friday of the month.

Gael Cooper, Administrative Assistant in the Educational Services department, added some sparkle to her t-shirt.

Individual schools and students have been collecting donations online and through the annual Jump Rope For Heart fundraiser. This year, the American Heart Association has developed several incentives for outstanding online fundraising, including special offers from US Games and the Cleveland Cavaliers, who will host an AHA Appreciation Night on March 31. This will feature a special offer for all students who raise at least $100 online by February 24 - even a chance to play on the hardwood before the game (qualifying families will be notified via email).

Here's a look at where donations are applied:
  • RAISING $25 helps the American Heart Association distribute nutrition and physical activity educational kits to 10 elementary schools participating in Jump Rope For Heart or Hoops For Heart. These events help teach kids how to keep their hearts healthy.
  • RAISING $125 provides underserved groups of women at Go Red For Women events educational kits that help them understand and lower their risks of heart disease.
  • RAISING $300 can save lives by training more than 20 members of the community on essential CPR skills using our innovative CPR Anytime personal kit. It takes just a few minutes to learn to save a life.
  • A GIFT OF $1,000 mobilizes 2,000 women to take charge of their heart health with a personal record tracker and other health information.
  • RAISING $2,500 helps provide direct one-on-one support, helpful information or just a listening ear to 1,200 stroke survivors and their families.
  • RAISING $10,000 funds two opportunities for a 10-week undergraduate research training program to encourage promising students from all disciplines, including women and members of minority groups underrepresented in the sciences, to consider research careers.
  • RAISING $25,000 helps fund a one-year pre-doctoral fellowship so a student can begin a career in heart or stroke research.
