August 6, 2019 -- Heights High cosmetology students created handmade wigs for cancer patients at the Cleveland Clinic Stephanie Tubbs Jones Health Center in East Cleveland.
“Losing your hair is just one of the difficult aspects of cancer treatment,” said cosmetology teacher Donna Pollard. “We hope that by creating these wigs for patients, we can make them feel a little bit better.”
Sixteen students created the wigs. Seniors (‘19) Layla Owens, Julia Ramsey, and Seniya Reaves, Ms. Pollard and assistant teacher Shirley Monroe delivered the wigs on May 15.
“I am so proud of the students,” said Ms. Pollard. “They were motivated to complete the wigs and to make them very special for these women. The patients were thrilled and when they tried on the wigs, we could see their excitement. Our students were so kind and sweet with the ladies.”
During the 2018-2019 school year, the students made 10 wigs for the donation, and they plan to have 10 more ready for this school year. The Cosmetology Department has been making wigs for donation to cancer patients for several years.
Cosmetology is a two-year course for juniors and seniors and is part of the Heights Career and Technical Education program. Seniors in the program take the Ohio exam to earn the state cosmetology license.
