Oct. 2, 2019 -- Noble Elementary hosted a hugely successful Family Engagement event this past April called “Soar Through Summer.” This event was run in conjunction with the BOGO Scholastic Book Fair as a kick-off to prepare scholars for summer learning and prevent the “Summer Slide.”

Scholars and families spent the evening selecting books to build their home libraries (with Book Fair books and unlimited free donated books) and traveling between classrooms with themes such as “Reading Under the Stars,” “Games to Grow On,” “Learn with your Teacher,”  “Meet a Real Published Author,” “Write with Lake Erie Ink” and “Crafts for Math and Literacy Minds.” Every participant also received a Summer Bridge Book specific to their grade level and a Summer Fun Bag created by the PTA with STEM, Nature, Creative Arts and Social-Emotional activities and supplies for Enrichment choices all summer long!

The event received support from the Noble Elementary PTA, the Ohio PTA Family Engagement Grant, the Noble Elementary AVID Program (including Principal Patrick Carpenter and AVID Coordinator Tekara Ray), Title I Program Specialist Beth Rae, Early Childhood Program Specialist Danielle Foran, and many other CH-UH district administrators and departments.

Ella Watterson, a Noble alumna and current 7th grade Monticello Middle School student, reported on this event, which had more than 200 people in attendance.

Soar Through Summer

For those of you that went to the Soar Through Summer program, you have an idea of what Soar Through Summer is. But for the people who weren’t there, here’s what you missed. The Soar Through Summer program had lots of games, reading, games with reading, math and lots of fun. There were costumes and people talking about what skills you should use over the summer. There was a raffle and Clifford and Geronimo Stilton. Parents had the chance to understand more about using school skills in school.

But there is a lot more than using skills over the summer. There are lots of things that are more advanced than you may think. Soar Through Summer (STS) is strategy olympics for academic readiness. STS also fits in with AVID. AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination.

“AVID is a program that is embedded in curriculum to prepare kids for college and career,” says Ms. Ray. AVID helps kids with being organized, learning how to take notes and develop reading skills.

STS fits in with AVID because it was an academic setting for parents that have the kids showing skills to practice during the summer. STS helps students feel empowered. When parents come to the school, it gives the school a chance to give them material for over the summer. It helps student families to feel more like a community. We hope that kids will learn that learning is year round and just because you are not in school doesn’t mean you should stop learning. We hope to continue STS because of the success it has had. Always remember to follow your dreams, never give up, and that practice makes perfect!
