Oct. 30, 2019 (Maple Buescher, Cleveland.com) -- There are 4 minutes and 4 seconds left in the third quarter of the homecoming football game when Cleveland Heights’ new kicker jogs onto the field, under the bright stadium lights. No. 74 hurries through the steps for the extra point and sends the ball arcing cleanly between the goalposts. It’s not a game-changing point - it brings the score to 33-0, Tigers - but the crowd screams itself hoarse anyway. Fans scream even louder when the kicker’s name is announced over the speakers:

For the first time in team memory, the player receiving hugs and high-fives on the field is a girl.

Cleveland Heights senior Olivia McKay is relatively new to football, but not to kicking. As a standout player on the girls’ soccer team, she has been developing a powerful foot for years. Those skills translate wonderfully to the football field – just as they do for Cleveland Heights’s other new kicker, McKay’s varsity soccer teammate India Pulphus.
