Students Earn Chinese Program Awards

May 23, 2017 -- Three Heights High students won scholarships to attend a two-week summer camp in China through a contest sponsored  by the Chinese Government in partnership with U.S. Representative Marcia Fudge.

Other Heights High and Roxboro Middle School students won awards at the 2017 Ohio K-12 Chinese Speech and Essay Contest in April.

All of the awards are sponsored by the Confucius Institute at the Cleveland State University.

Furthermore, nine Roxboro Middle School students and 10 Heights High School Chinese language students won awards in the Chinese speech and essay contest. Each participant selected a topic for their speech and answered questions from the judges following their presentation.This summer, juniors Kamara Cooper, Alicia Lassiter and La'shaun Morrow will travel to China’s capital city, Beijing, and the city of Yunnan in southwest China. They will visit historic and cultural sites and take Chinese language and culture classes.

Kuei-Fang Tai is the Roxboro Middle School Chinese Language teacher.

“They used their own time and stayed after school to prepare their speech,” Ms. Tai said of her students. “Their diligence is the key to their success.”

She also recognized the parents of the students for attending the event and supporting their students’ Chinese instruction.

Each middle school essay entry was written in Chinese characters by hand and contained between 100-500 characters for the topic they chose. Ashton Everette, DiAvian DeClouet and Emma Vail won second place and Katrina Palmer won third place in the middle school group. William Benham and Lukas Chew were awarded an honorable mention. Tait Manning, Charlie King and Kenji Sakaie earned the award of excellence.
