HMS Classes Visit City Hall, Police and Fire Departments
Students with Mayor InfeldOct. 10, 2017 -- Mr. Goldberg's, Mrs. Moss's and Mrs. Smith's classes from Heights Middle School visited the Mayor of University Heights, along with the police and fire departments, as a culminating field trip for their social studies unit, Rules, Laws and Government.

"The students in this group are multiply disabled, autistic or cognitively delayed, so community trips are a big piece of our programs," explained intervention specialist Laura Moss. "Actual experiences are more meaningful than reading about a topic for our students."

The social studies classes have been learning about rules, laws and consequences and government. On September 28, they visited University Heights City Hall, where Mayor Susan Infeld explained her job and her role in government. Next, the classes visited the University Heights Police Department, where they got a tour and learned what it is like being a police officer, how laws are enforced and what happens if they are broken.

Finally, the group walked over to the University Heights Fire Department for another tour. The firemen showed them their truck and equipment, and explained what they use it all for.

"We even got to see one firefighter slide down the fire pole!" said Moss. "It was a wonderful trip for our students."
