Get to Know Heights Career Tech Coordinator Katrina Myers
March 19, 2019 -- The Career and Technical Education program at Heights High is proud to welcome its new coordinator, Katrina Myers, who has spent the past 19 years supervising special projects and CTE in the Cleveland Metropolitan School District.
Heights High’s CTE program integrates rigorous academic standards into career and technical education and hands-on training. According to the website, “Students have the opportunity to earn professional certifications, industry-recognized credentials and college credit in 23 unique pathways,” including arts and communication, business and administrative services, construction technologies, and health sciences, to name just a few.
Myers said she is excited to work for the Cleveland Heights-University Heights district because she knows “that this community is open to new ideas and has high standards. I see so much potential for growth.”
She wants to build on the current strengths to take programming to the next level. She also hopes to work to expose all of the school’s students, whether they’re enrolled in CTE courses or not, to various career opportunities by encouraging every sophomore to have a shadow experience in an industry they find interesting. Myers would also like to ensure that all students visit college campuses during each of their years at Heights High so they “have seen the direction of possible.”
Myers is currently working with Nancy Peppler, the district’s Supervisor of Community and School Partnerships, to bring experts and professionals into the building to meet with both students and staff. Both are excited about the new Tri-C Culinary Arts program that will be housed at Heights High next year, welcoming in CTE students from five area high schools.
Myers also hopes to better market the current programs to district families so they understand all that is available to them. “I am interested in helping families and students be open to non-traditional routes to success. The certifications and college credits that are earned in CTE are an excellent foundation for students to enter a career path.”
