Boulevard Strengthens Student Relationships With Sewing Club
June 17, 2022 -- There are all kinds of ways for adults to form trusting and meaningful relationships with students in our schools. It happens in classrooms, on athletic fields, while playing music or creating art. At Boulevard, it happens while sewing.

Yes, sewing. Nurse’s aide Marilyn Doss, herself an avid sewer who has run community classes for young people, “just thought there were girls who needed this,” she said of her twice weekly Sewing Club. “It seemed like a good fit.”

She and a friend, Dr. Sandria Dixon, a retired educator and fellow sewer, have been meeting with 11 girls and 1 boy on Mondays and Fridays during recess for the past few months. They started by teaching the basics: how to thread a needle, how to sew a button, a variety of common stitches.

Students then moved on to the four donated sewing machines that are set up in the school’s media center. They perfected an upholstered pillow, which they could bring home for personal use or to gift to their families. The children were so proud of their work.

But it’s the relationships that meant the most to Ms. Doss and likely the young artisans. “This is about much more than sewing,” she said. “it’s a segue for conversation.”
