July 1, 2022 -- Literacy Night at Oxford Elementary is always a great time, but this time was extra special! Following the theme of an extravaganza, Title One,
Oxford HUB, the Oxford PTA and Hands-On Health made the event just that. There were free books, summer swag bags, family literacy games, music and even bubbles! Families could cruise through the Writers Walk of Fame in the first floor hallway to read writing samples from Oxford students.
The Oxford community was able to pre-register for the event during the "Burgers and Blood Pressures" event, provided by alumnae Dr. Jenn Macklin and Dr. Jess Macklin of
Hands-on Health. The Doctors, as the HUB scholars call them, provided glucose and blood pressure screenings, along with brochures packed with next steps and tips for a “wealthy heart.”
During the Extravaganza, Oxford HUB provided social-emotional literacy through kindness coins, or #HUBcoins, and the opportunity to plant sunflower seeds. They also had an origami artist and face painter on site for families to enjoy. Oxford HUB member Nathan Williams stole the show by manning the Go Fish game, and community members participated in a ticket raffle to win prizes provided by Oxford HUB. One of the items donated to the raffle was a t-shirt from Ms. Murray’s (Oxford’s Administrative Assistant) daughter whose company Got 2 B Me makes apparel with positive mental health messages. The Oxford PTA empowered families through financial literacy resources on life insurance and budgeting tools like
Savvy Girl Money. Heights Library, Oxford HUB’s primary partner, was there to sign visitors up for free library cards.
Towards the end of the event, families gathered in the school's gym to watch Oxford HUB’s first Talent Show! Students in grades K-5 performed dance routines and sang songs. Kindergartner Archiquito White and the Aries (his back-up dancers) performed the popular hit “Leave the Door Open” by Bruno Mars. After the last bow, families grabbed a snack and walked through Oxford HUB’s interactive art show. The Oxford Elementary community really came together to make the night special for families.
