June 2, 2020 -- The 2020 Heights High National Honor Society Induction Ceremony was scheduled for March 14. However, because of the COVID pandemic the event was changed to a smaller more intimate ceremony with staff members planting ‘2020 NHS Inductee’ signs in the yards of all inductees.
Seventy-two sophomores and juniors were inducted into the National Honor Society this year.
The NHS advisors, Haethem Rasul and Nicole Zubik, planned the NHS Alternative Induction Ceremony. “We wanted to recognize these hard-working students for their accomplishments and create a little pomp and circumstance for them,” said Mr. Rasul. “I am so very proud of them and humbled to be their advisor.”
Sophomores and juniors with a 3.5 weighted cumulative GPA are eligible to be invited to apply for membership. The four pillars of NHS are Scholarship, Service, Character, and Leadership, and these guide the work of the group.
The members lead the peer tutoring initiative three days a week in the school media center after school. Members also provide support and service for many District and community events.
In addition to the 2020 inductees, there are 117 current members and after the class os 2020 graduates, next year’s membership will be 125.
The adults who helped Mr. Rasul and Ms. Zubnik plan the signs and honor the students are: Superintendent Liz Kirby, Board of Education member Malia Lewis, Guidance Department Administrative Assistant Sherelle Rozier, College NOW Access Professional Carmen Daniels, biology teacher Leatrice Clark, School Counselors Tandra Menefee, Michael Murray, and Charlene Searcy. Mr. Zubik also helped.
