Board of Education Meeting Summary - May 5, 2025

May 6, 2025 -- At the monthly regular Board of Education meeting on May 5, the Superintendent and Board of Education recognized student winners of recent academic competitions, the Board approved a resolution in favor of the Fair School Funding Plan, and the Board approved the adoption of a new pre-kindergarten curriculum.

Regular Meeting Overview

  • Heights High School social studies teacher Patrick Fisher presented a recap of his class’s trip to Washington, D.C.

  • Nika Newsome, Jobs for Ohio’s Graduates Program Manager; Jasmin Martin, JOG Career Specialist Instructor; Molly Feghali, Director of PACE Training & Curriculum, and several Heights High students presented a recap of the Youth Career Olympics and the past school year’s accomplishments.

  • Superintendent Kirby shared updates on the past month’s work within the five goals of the District’s Strategic Plan.

  • Coordinator of Curriculum & Instruction Amanda Zapotechne and Early Childhood Specialist Danielle Foran presented additional findings from this year’s pilot of new pre-kindergarten curricular materials and the recommendation to adopt. The Board voted to approve the adoption of the materials.

  • Chief Financial Officer Scott Gainer presented information on the cash balance/carryover that school districts maintain. The current state budget bill includes a cap on these cash balances. Under this budget bill and its cash balance cap component, the CH-UH City School District stands to lose $6.6 million in funding over the next two years.

  • The Board voted to approve a resolution supporting the Fair School Funding Plan. The Board also voted to approve a resolution opposing caps on school district cash reserves.
