Middle School Students Address World Issues

Model U.N. students from Roxboro Middle School

Jan. 26, 2017 -- Students from Monticello and Roxboro middle schools represented seven countries at the Model United Nations Conference at John Carroll University, tackling issues ranging from public health to international security.

The event on January 11 and 12 was sponsored by the Cleveland Council on World Affairs. Students from 15 other area middle schools represented 42 countries. Monticello students represented the countries of Argentina, Canada and the United Kingdom, and Roxboro represented Bolivia, Egypt, Kenya and South Korea.

To open the simulation, students listened to a speech on life for children in El Salvador from Mary Stevenson, the Executive Director of the COAR Peace Mission. Participants then researched and prepared their country’s position of current topics being addressed by the United Nations that included:

  • Addressing the Risk of Nuclear Proliferation in the Middle East
  • The Role of Commodities and Natural Resources in Fueling Conflict 
  • Technology Sharing for Economic Development
  • Protecting World Heritage Sites from Emerging Threats
  • Addressing the Spread and Containment of the Zika Virus
  • Addressing the Implications of Counterfeit Medicines
  • Promoting Sustainable Urbanization
  • Preventing the Spread of Islamic State and “Lone-Wolf” Sympathizers 
  • International Security in High Traffic Waterways
