April 28, 2017 -- Roxboro Middle School eighth grader Fiona Macke is a finalist in the Maltz Museum's Stop the Hate essay contest.

The annual contest is open to sixth through twelfth graders in northeast Ohio. Out of more than 3,000 entries to the 2016-2017 contest, 25 finalists representing 22 schools were selected. The essay prompt asked writers to describe a time when they experienced injustice or unfair treatment based on race, socioeconomic status, gender, religion, etc., and how they have used that experience to create a more inclusive society in the future.

According to the Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage, since it launched eight years ago, Stop the Hate has empowered more than 20,000 students to stand up for what they believe, awarding $800,000 in programmatic anti-bias grants and academic scholarships.
