Canterbury Elementary Awarded IB World School Certification

International Baccalaureate

July 25, 2016 – Canterbury Elementary School has been named an authorized International Baccalaureate (IB) World School, Primary Years Programme (PYP). Canterbury will join a diverse, global community of schools offering the program.

The IB World School program seeks to educate students so they become thoughtful, caring, and prepared citizens of the world upon graduation. The goal is for IB students to not only be able to navigate their own futures, but actively contribute to strengthening the world’s social, economic, and cultural environments.

“I am so proud of the students, faculty, and staff at Canterbury for this incredible achievement,” said CH-UH Superintendent Dr. Talisa Dixon. “The International Baccalaureate program provides within our schools a comprehensive plan for high quality, international education that benefits every student. Increasing the opportunities for IB education in our district is a critical part of our educational strategy for the coming years. With Canterbury’s certification, we are well on the way to reaching our goal of having five IB schools by 2020.”

Canterbury first applied for the authorization certification, entered a trial implementation period as a candidate, then underwent an evaluative visit from IB representatives. The commendations provided following the visit, based on the school’s performance, included praise for community knowledge of the program, use of community experts, and the special education programs and experiences for students, among others.

Roxboro Middle and Roxboro Elementary are both authorized IB schools. Monticello Middle School is expected to be authorized as an IB school in 2017. Fairfax Elementary will begin the IB School candidacy phase this fall, and Cleveland Heights High School will start the exploration phase in the spring of 2017.
