CH-UH School Board to Invoice State of Ohio for Cost of Charter Schools

June 8, 2016 – Joining more than 60 school districts across Ohio, the Cleveland Heights-University Heights Board of Education passed a resolution at their June 7 meeting authorizing the school district to invoice the State of Ohio Department of Education for more than $22,507,019 of local funding which the state has diverted to charter schools.

The amount was derived from the gap between the amount of money the State provides per-pupil for education, compared to the amount that the State diverts from public schools to pay for charter schools

“Since 2000, the State of Ohio has diverted more than $22 million, money our residents voted to provide to our public schools, to a failing charter school system with no transparency and/or public accountability,” said CH-UH Board Vice President Ron Register.

“It’s bad enough that they created this parallel “public” school system which is failing students at a shocking rate,” continued Mr. Register. “But to make matters far worse, excess state funding is diverted away to charter schools from our local schools to pay for their failed experiment."

"It’s time that local communities stood up and demanded an end to this harmful system. We are proud to join so many other Ohio school districts in this effort to invoice the State for the expenses they have accrued. But we won’t hold our breath waiting for the check.”

Other local school districts which have passed similar resolutions in the past year include Parma, Westlake, Euclid, and Brecksville-Broadview Heights.
