The Musical Grease is Coming!

Oct. 23, 2015 --
The eighth annual Heights High Musical Grease will showcase student singing and dancing from Nov. 5-8 in the Auditorium at the Heights High Wiley Campus.

Performances on Nov. 5-7, Thursday-Saturday, will begin at 7:30 p.m. The Nov. 8 Sunday performance will begin at 4 p.m.

Tickets are $6 and $10, cash or money order only made payable to Heights High School.

Tickets can be purchased at the school's main office (2181 Miramar Blvd; look for visitor parking and enter building at main entrance) from 10 a.m. until noon, Monday through Friday. Or you can purchase tickets from any student in the production.

More than 130 students will star in the leading roles and in the chorus. The students have been preparing for the show since last spring and now the cast is busy rehearsing during the vocal music classes and after school.

Vocal Music teacher Jesse Lange is the department’s new director and the show’s director.

“I have been impressed with the students’ talent and work ethic,” said Mr. Lange. “And I have seen so many of the experienced students step up to mentor the less experienced students. Their leadership has been invaluable.”

The show is set in the 1950’s but the story line is familiar to most young people.

“This is one of the first rock musicals, the music is fun,” added Mr. Lange. “And the themes of love, rebellion and fitting in are universal themes of youth.”

Senior Flannery Jewell, playing the role of Sandy loves the upbeat music in the show. “The music is really fun and high energy,” said Jewell.

Sophomore Tedd Byers plays the role of Doody, has enjoyed learning about the history of the period. “I feel like I am learning more about the music and life of my grandparents’ generation,” said Byers.

Also contributing to the show is the Instrumental Music Department, preparing a small rock band accompanying the show.

Keith Newman leads the Stage Crew of 20 students who are doing some design, operating and designing the lights and helping with the sound.

Audio Engineering teacher Andy Bennekamper and his students Malik Niang, Michael Sims and Jordan Ward are responsible for the wireless microphones worn by the actors. They will also set up the monitors on stage and will run the sound board in the auditorium.

The show is a collaborative effort. “I really appreciated the support of the administration, Instrumental Music Department, the Stage Crew and Director and the Vocal Music Parent Organization,” said Mr. Lange. “And, our parents are amazing. They send us great students and are very supportive of our work.”

This year’s performance comes after the high school’s major move to the temporary Heights High with a smaller auditorium. With the move logistics and a different facility, this year’s show includes high school students only. The elementary and middle school music programs offer excellent programming that prepares students for high school level performing; many terrific shows are in the works at these schools for this winter and spring.

Heights High students will attend the temporary Heights High for two years and return to a renovated building at Cedar and Lee in the fall of 2017.
