The June 16 Board Work Session at the CH-UH Board of Education will center on sustainable designs in the new high school, including constructing an energy efficient building and using the building as a teaching tool, known as BaTT. The meeting will be at 7 p.m.
Laura Steinbrink of HLMS Sustainability Solutions will provide an overview to the Board and community on the sustainability goals and individual design concepts that were generated through an integrated design event, called an eco-charrette, last May, and how those ideas have been implemented thus far. The eco-charrette was an all-day session with attendees from the community, the sustainability working group (SWG), design and construction team, and district staff, where concepts were discussed and ideas brought forward to shape the design process with the goal of achieving a sustainable building, as well as identifying areas for sustainable concepts to be integrated into the building’s operations, culture and curriculum.
Steinbrink’s presentation will include:
An analysis of progress made towards achieving the goals defined through the 2014 Eco-Charrette process. The Eco-Charrette process engaged community members, including those with SWG.
The goals as stated in the report issued after the Eco-Charrette are:
- Build a net-zero ready building - the total amount of energy used by the building on an annual basis is roughly equal to the amount of renewable energy created on the site.
- Build for 100% onsite storm water management
- Achieve zero waste in construction and operations
- Design and operate building for human health
- Design and operate building to be a teaching tool
Most of the current high school at the corner of Cedar and Lee will be demolished during the summer of 2015 and a new high school will be reconstructed around the remaining historic portions of the building. Students will attend the Wiley Campus/Temporary Heights High in University Heights for two years. Click here to see construction updates at the temporary Heights High.
