June 7, 2017 -- Two of the senior-specific activities offered to the 12th grade class are the Senior Project and the Senior Awards Ceremony.
Senior Project
The Senior Project is an opportunity for seniors to design a three-week learning activity based on their interest. The project can be an internship, shadowing or other learning experience.
The students partner with a community sponsor.
Twenty-nine seniors presented the results of their senior project to students, parents and staff members on May 23. The projects included music composition activities, historical research, internships at a childcare center, Lake Erie Ink, Shaker Lakes Nature Center, a real estate office, engineering firm, the Heights Library, a landscaping company, an arts non-profit and with several physicians, judges and teachers.
In the written reports, students said that they learned:
It’s easier to stay motivated when you feel that your work is for something greater than yourself.
That I can be persistent. I was better with deadlines than I usually am. Working at the studio and having a schedule helped me be more productive.
Being patient with customers is important for a business.
Preschool students are so curious. They are not afraid to get muddy and not afraid of spiders. They ask great questions that challenged me.
More about Word and Excel and the importance of checking my work for accuracy. Also, to keep a clean workspace.
How difficult it is to be a teacher – to control students, to instill confidence in students and to be a team player.
The importance of having a positive attitude around children and how to interact with a child who is having a temper tantrum.
To see school through the eyes of a teacher, not just a student.
Being a doctor is not an easy job. They are very dedicated.
It is beneficial to be thorough in doing tasks. It is extremely satisfying to do even little tasks that help our clients. I learned to listen better to people.
I recognized that my compassion and composure are important strengths as I head toward my goal of attending medical school.
Senior Awards Ceremony
The May 24 Senior Awards Ceremony recognized many senior students for their achievement in the area of academics, service, leadership and athletics.
Representatives from local and alumni family foundations presented scholarship awards to many students.
The National Merit and Presidential Scholars were recognized.
The Heights High Ideal Student Award was presented to Callie Swaim Fox and Devonte Simon.
The Jon Lewis Award was presented to Faith Morris.
All other awardees are included in the event program.
