Karen Bauer-Blazer Selected to Serve on State Committee
Oct. 17, 2018 -- Karen A. Bauer-Blazer is the CH-UH Instructional Specialist for Social Studies in the area of Curriculum and Instruction and was selected by the Ohio Department of Education (ODE) to serve on the American History and American Government Content Advisory Committee.
The October 2-5 meeting in Columbus included nearly 20 members, including educators from Ohio schools, ODE and American Institute of Research.
The group reviewed newly developed test questions for Ohio's State Tests and made recommendations about grade and content appropriateness.
The questions that survive the process won't be used for at least two years. “The process is lengthy and includes review by history and government experts and the ODE Fairness Committee to check the questions for cultural bias,” said Ms. Bauer-Blazer.
“It was very enlightening to be in the room as possible test items were discussed by teachers representing school districts all parts of Ohio,” she continued. “It was great to meet so many teachers who are dedicated to their students and knowledgeable in their content area.”
The meeting is just one step in the lengthy process of vetting test questions for use on future Ohio end-of-course exams. The goal is to create balanced and fair assessments aligned to the Ohio Content Standards for Social Studies.
