Rox El School Counselor Recognized by OSCA

Michelle Jackson

Feb. 14, 2019 -- Roxboro Elementary School Counselor Dr. Michelle Jackson was recognized by the Ohio School Counselor Association for her dedication to students and as an advocate for her profession.

Excerpts from the letter sent by OSCA President Nichole Miller to Superintendent Dr. Dixon and Principal Pulling:

"As school counselors, we are charged with supporting student academic, social emotional, and career domains. School counselors are the front line in addressing social emotional issues. Often we are tasked with responsibilities outside of our area of expertise. Additionally, many have caseloads that exceed the American School Counseling Association recommend student:counselor ratio of 250:1. This is important in order to effectively implement a comprehensive program. Our board believes that every student deserves a school counselor at every grade level. Michelle’s passion is shown not only in her work with students but also in advocating for our profession

Because we do not yet have a counselor in every building, with a comprehensive program in place, our work is even more critical. Our board meets quarterly, with elected volunteer members. They give up their Friday night and Saturday in order to move our profession forward. There are additional events that they are also required to attend. Our board advocates, unites and supports professional school counselors in our role in supporting student success. I want you to be aware of what an amazing employee you have in Dr. Jackson."

The OSCA sent the letter during National School Counseling week, February 4 - 8.
