Feb. 12, 2019 -- Tyger McClendon is a Heights alum with a spirit for service. She was part of the Cosmetology Program graduated from Heights High in 2001. Then she graduated from John Carroll University in 2006 with a degree in Communications. She also took classes at JCU in the graduate level non-profit management program.

Part of her life is spent as a professional trainer, teaching doctors how to use medical information software. The other part of her life is devoted to service. Her passion is mentoring high school aged young women to help them meet their potential and enter adulthood ready for responsibilities.

“My life was changed when my cousin was killed in a domestic violence situation,” said Tyger. “My mission since then is to help high school girls learn to communicate in a healthy way, speak up for themselves, love themselves and build healthy relationships.”

Ms. McClendon’s group is called Zollie’s Angels, named for her Great Grandmother. She holds regular meetings and also hosts overnight events. Activities include guest speakers, college readiness activities, games and field trips to expose the girls to more aspects of life.

Two Height High cosmetology seniors are members of the group. Cyanne Clarno and Ronecia Daniels. Cyanne has been a Zollie’s Angel for two years and appreciates the support of both Tyger and the other girls in the group. “We talk about issues and how to be open with people, how to communicate. We also learn about scholarship opportunities and have fun,” she said.

This is Ronecia’s first year in the group. “I feel like we are building another family. I can talk to Tyger like she is a big sister. We learn from each other, and talk about healthy communication skills and healthy relationships,” she said.

Heights High Cosmetology teacher Donna Pollard appreciates the volunteer hours that Tyger gives to her program. The students have begun their annual project where they make wigs to donate to cancer patients. Tyger is helping students with the sewing, design and styling of the wigs.

Other Heights students who are Zollie’s Angels are: Haven Lee, Teja Morgan and
Jada Streiffel. The remainder of the members are from Cleveland, Warrensville Heights and Solon.
