Feb. 24, 2018 -- The Heights High Minority Student Achievement Network (MSAN) student club, students currently in AP (Advanced Placement) courses, and the guidance department are working to inform students about the advantages of enrolling in AP courses.

Students who are in AP courses sponsored ‘I am AP’ tables in the cafeteria recently. Each display focused on a different AP course. The students at each table talked to their peers about the courses and what it takes to succeed in an AP course.

What is the secret to succeeding in an AP course?

“Just keeping up with the work and asking for help when you need it,” is a common statement from MSAN students.

Students are currently in the process of selecting courses for next year. The school staff wants to encourage students to understand the opportunities available with an AP course and the support provided for students enrolled in an AP course.

“AP courses prepare students for college,” said guidance counselor Charlene Searcy. “When a student completes an AP course, they will be familiar with the demands of a college course.”

The MSAN students list several advantages of taking AP courses:

- Stand out in college admissions process
- Have more flexibility in your college schedule because you were granted advanced placement and do not need to take as many entry level courses
- Challenge yourself
- You will work hard and you will see the connections between your interest and the course content
