The September 13 grand opening of the new Heights High stadium wasn’t just about athletics. The day also included a recycling and litter prevention program being piloted at athletic events, with ongoing support from the citizen Sustainability Working Group, SWG.

The SWG recruited 30 community volunteers to stand by the recycling and trash cans to encourage fans to place their plastic bottles in the recycling bins and their trash in the garbage cans. They also walked through the stands, collecting trash and recycling.

The goal of the program is to recycle materials, decrease the amount of garbage generated by the District and keep the new stadium clean and beautiful.

The SWG volunteers were happy with both the recycling collection and litter reduction, but know that the program is young and will improve with time.

“Our next step is to support the Athletic Department and District in developing a realistic recycling plan for our new stadium,” said SWG member Ditte Wolin.

SWG members who were involved in organizing the September 13 program were: Sam Bell, Laura Marks, Glenn Odenbrett, Joan Spoerl, Steve Warner, Ditte Wolin and Alan Wilkinson.

The Sustainable Working Group is a citizen group that formed as part of the CH-UH Facilities Project. Their mission is to inform and support the District’s work to make the facilities environmentally sustainable.
