District Hosting Events to Prepare Kids, Families for Kindergarten

CH-UH Kindergarten students participate in class.

Feb. 8, 2016 -- “March into Kindergarten” is a statewide movement promoting the timely registration of children for their upcoming kindergarten year, as early as the March before. Why is it important to register your child so far in advance of the actual school year? Research shows that it ensures a smoother transition for children if they are familiar with their new school and mentally prepared for the big change on their horizon and that it allows the local school to better prepare to meet the individual needs of its incoming students.

CHUH’s Kindernet program, the outreach arm dedicated to recruiting and engaging prospective families, is supporting two district-wide events in March in an effort to better prepare the kindergarten class of 2016-17 and their parents. The first event is Kindergarten Information Night, which will be held at Noble Elementary School on Wednesday, March 2 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Superintendent Dr. Talisa Dixon will speak about the value of a Tiger Nation education and registrar Pat Christopherson will give specifics on the registration process. Every elementary building in the district will have teacher and parent representatives prepared to answer questions and share their experiences with interested families.

There will also be representatives from the Before & After Care programs, student services and transportation departments. Child care will be provided by Family Connections, so gather your fellow parents and head over to Noble, located at 1293 Ardoon Street, on March 2. Attendees are asked to park on the playground lot located at Montevista and Noble Roads.

One week later, on Wednesday, March 9, families will be invited into their assigned neighborhood school for an Open House and tour. Again, they will have the chance to meet with parents and teachers, including building principals and current students, as well as witness firsthand the learning that is taking place in classrooms. The Open House will last from 9:30 until 11 a.m. For school addresses and contact information as well as attendance boundaries, please view these maps.

Each building’s PTA Kindernet representatives are also planning an evening Open House sometime during the spring. These will be held on separate dates across the district as they are being combined with already-existing school activities. For instance, Fairfax will host theirs in conjunction with its annual Literacy Night on April 14, an evening of food, fun and learning games organized by teachers.

Please share this information widely with the families of preschoolers who are considering joining Tiger Nation. Anyone with an older child who might be newly enrolling in our district is also welcome to attend any of these events to get to know their neighborhood elementary school.
