Student is Commended Merit Scholar

Ava Collyer

Oct. 15, 2019 -- Heights High senior Ava Collyer was named a Commended Scholar in the 2020 National Merit Scholarship Program.

About 34,000 Commended Scholars throughout the nation are recognized for their exceptional promise. The Commended Scholars placed among the top 50,000 scorers of more than 1.5 million students who qualified for the competition by taking the 2018 PSAT test.

Ava is very interested in biology and one of her favorite classes has been the AP Biology that she took last year with Nicole Zubik. “I am especially interested in the immune system and diseases,” she said. “That class introduced me to the topic and I plan to study biology in college and I’d like to do research in that area someday.”

She also liked the US AP History class with Anthony Bifulco.

“Heights High has been a good place for me,” she said. “The social environment is supportive and that allowed me to focus on my school work.”

She is applying to the University of Pittsburgh and Ohio State University.

Senior Rohan Bruce was named a 2019 National Merit Scholar Semi-Finalist in the competition and has the opportunity to advance to the Finalist level and qualify for the National Merit Scholarship.
