April 19, 2018 -- Four students in David Stewart’s American Sign Language 4 (ASL) course visited Mary Taylor’s second-grade classroom at Daniel Morgan Elementary School in the Cleveland Metropolitan School District near University Circle.

 

Participating Heights High students are: Ella Damaser, Kmari Dates, Lauren Iott and Serenity Jackson.

The Heights students signed, or interpreted in sign language, while Mr. Stewart read a book to the young students. Then the older students each worked with a group of second graders to teach them signs for the letters that spell their names, and the signs for animals and superheroes.

“Our students loved being the experts and working with the students,”  said Mr. Stewart. “This was a good example of how they might use ASL in the future.”

And, the budding ASL learners loved being around the high school students. “We all got hugs before we left, my students loved it!” he continued.

Mr. Stewart made the classroom connection through a student’s mother, Tori Weisberg, who is an aide in Ms. Taylor’s classroom. Also assisting in Ms. Taylor’s classroom is student teacher John Gilmour.
