Heights High Welcome Letter From Principal Hopkins

August 24, 2020

Dear Heights High families,

It is with great pleasure that I welcome everyone to the 2020-2021 school year! The Heights High staff has been diligently preparing for the return of our Tigers, and we are looking forward to another year of excellence! Our dedicated educators have been engaged in professional learning opportunities to keep their teaching skills honed, and our committed custodial staff has been meticulously cleaning and disinfecting our building. While we know this school year will be different from previous ones, it will not damper our dedication to providing an “A” rated quality education to our scholars!

Scholars are scheduled to begin the 2020-2021 school year on Wednesday, September 2nd, 2020. Scholars will engage in remote learning the first nine (9) weeks due to health and safety reasons. We know the importance of meeting your scholar’s teachers and getting a glimpse of the curriculum breakdown, so Curriculum Night will be held virtually this year on August 31. Details are below.

Communication between home and school is critical, especially during a time when circumstances can change overnight. It is one of my top priorities as your principal, to communicate openly and frequently to keep you all posted on important developments. I encourage you to also visit the “School Information” tab on the Heights High School and the District webpage for up-to-date information. I plan to communicate via text, Remind, Infinite Campus email, and Twitter, so please ensure your contact information is updated on Infinite Campus.

While we navigate through these uncharted waters together, I look forward to another great year with you and your child!

Heights High at a glance:

When is the first day of school?

The first day of school is Wednesday, September 2, 2020. The school will reopen in a virtual environment.

What time do virtual classes begin?

Our goal is to provide a schedule very similar to our in-person bell schedule so that when the time comes to return to the building, the transition will be seamless.

  • High School Schedule

The Bell schedule is still under review and will be shared when finalized.

What time will my child be considered late for school?

  • The first-period classes begin at approximately at 8:15 a.m.

  • Scholars who are not logged into their 1st-period class at 8:15 a.m. will be marked absent. When/if the scholars virtually arrive in class, the teacher will modify the attendance and mark the scholar tardy.

  • Attendance will be taken every period.

When does the school day end?

  • The virtual school day ends at approximately 3:05 p.m.

How will my child receive breakfast and lunch and what is the cost?

  • There is no cost for breakfast or lunch.

  • The District is currently working on plans to ensure all students have access to breakfast and lunch on a daily basis.  More information regarding breakfast and lunch pick up locations will be forthcoming.

When will I receive my scholar’s schedule?

Students’ schedules will be released on Wednesday, August 26th. Parents and students may view schedules online using Infinite Campus. If you have questions regarding the schedule, please contact your child’s guidance counselor. If you don’t have access or need help getting set up for Infinite Campus, please access: Parent Portal Account https://tinyurl.com/CHUHParentPortal

When are the dates for Parent Orientation and Curriculum Night?

Heights High will host a virtual Parent Orientation and a virtual Curriculum Night. During both of these events, students and families will have the opportunity to meet our amazing educators, learn about the excellent educational programs, ask questions about the classes your student will take, and build relationships. We are creating a website with materials for Parent Orientation & Curriculum Night. Below are the dates for these events:

  • Parent Orientation:  August 28th, 31st and September 1st (During the school day)

  • Curriculum Night:  August 31st (5:30pm - 7:30pm)

What are the students' expectations for the classroom?

  • The Cleveland Heights-University Heights City School District believes that it is important to maintain respectful, responsible, safe learning and working environments for all students and employees. The following expectations will extend to our virtual environment (click here for Expectations).

  • Please check the school website for dates to pick-up course materials.

  • Chromebook pick-up at Heights High Thursday August 27th from 5 pm to 8 pm for families with students in any school.

What can I expect the curriculum and assignments to look like?

  • Parents and scholars should expect a class syllabus from teachers per course.

  • The curriculum will consist of Synchronous and Asynchronous learning.

What if I need to speak with my child’s teacher?

  • Virtual: Families have the opportunity to reach out to staff via email (located on the weekly learning schedule).

  • In-person: Our District must adhere to COVID-19 protocols. In order to ensure the safety of our staff, we are asking you to request a virtual meeting to address inquiries or concerns. Please feel free to contact your child’s counselor (see below) to schedule a meeting.
