Mar. 19, 2018 -- Biology students everywhere learn that DNA is the code of life. But what does it look like? Students in Marquiza Russell’s Biology class extracted strands of DNA from a strawberry and saw the spider web like filaments that hold the code of life for delicious strawberries.

The lab included several steps that required students to be focused and organized as they measured, poured and strained liquid and gel and used a pipette.

“Biology is the study of life,” said Mrs. Russell. “Understanding DNA, the code of life, helps us appreciate why each living thing is unique and how each living thing adapts to the ever-changing environment.” Mrs. Russell was very pleased with the lab results.

“The students worked with their teams to ask purposeful questions to learn something new as they completed the project,” she continued.

She especially appreciated the student comments of wonder when they saw the DNA: "It's raw!" and "Wow, this is the genetic story."

Sophomore Shemar Turner views the DNA on the end of the probe stick.
