Board Approves Athletics To Join Greater Cleveland Conference

Apr. 13, 2022 -- The CH-UH Board of Education voted Tuesday to approve a resolution for the District to join the Greater Cleveland Conference (GCC) for athletics beginning in the 2023-2024 school year.

On March 23, the District received an official invitation from the GCC to compete in its interscholastic athletics and activities. The school districts in the GCC are Brunswick, Euclid, Medina, Mentor, Solon, and Strongsville. CH-UH is currently a member of the Lake Erie League and will remain in the league through the 2022-2023 school year.

Athletic Director Joe D’Amato led an initial discussion with the Board on the possibility of joining the GCC during the regular BOE meeting on April 5 (video here). Head Football Coach Mac Stephens and Cross Country & Track Coach Scott McNulty joined Mr. D’Amato at the meeting, expressing their support for the move. A key factor in the decision to change leagues is the opportunity for greater competition for both high school and middle school sports.

“Our sports programs are important to the community and keeping kids in the district… so if we can provide better programming and experiences for our kids at the middle school level, we feel it’ll give them better opportunities to be successful at the high school level,” said D’Amato.

The Board continued the discussion on April 12 during a special meeting.

“We’ve had a generations-long tradition in the LEL, and it was a great league for us for many years,” said Board Member Dan Heintz. “But it’s time for this move to be made. We can’t pass up the opportunities the GCC can offer our student athletes.”

The District will begin competition and activities in the Greater Cleveland Conference at the beginning of the 2023-2024 academic and athletic year.
