Nov. 21, 2023 -- The Heights High Art Department is proud to announce that senior Johanna Carlyle and junior Emma Naypauer will have pieces exhibited in Otterbein University's 54th Annual Juried High School Art Exhibition. The AP Studio Art students’ pieces are included with 63 other artworks from 420 entries by 9th through 12th grade students from across the state of Ohio and was selected by artist Chaz O'Neil.

“We are thrilled to have two student works selected for display in Otterbein University’s High School Art Exhibition,” said Sarah Cooper, Heights High’s AP Studio Art teacher. “Johanna and Emma are both exceptional artists with clear vision and skilled execution of complex media.”

Johanna has developed an interest in showcasing the female form and anatomy through sculptural materials. And her metalwork piece “Vulvacious” is a continuation in her journey of exploring this interest and improving her skills in these mediums. “I was pleased to see a jewelry piece of Johanna's was chosen,” said Mrs. Cooper, “as she has developed such a refined handling of 3D materials.” Johanna’s jewelry piece will not be available for public viewing but she still has the opportunity to receive a $3,000 talent award and additional scholarships for her artwork.

Emma's art piece “Shelter” is a still life painting of her bedroom desk and window which showcases her ability to recreate the different textures, lighting, and shadows that are part of a scene. “Emma's painting is also a great representation of her advanced 2D skill set,” praised Cooper, “which continues to evolve everyday from her exhaustive efforts inside and outside the classroom.”

An awards ceremony will be held on December 2 for the students and the families.

The exhibition is free to the public and will be on view in the Art & Communication Building at Otterbein University from November 27 through December 7. The gallery hours are Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and weekends from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Please contact 614-823-1792 for additional information.

Each year Otterbein University's Juried High School Art Exhibition supports and promotes young artists in Ohio and the contiguous states. Students gain experience preparing and submitting their artwork for review by a qualified arts professional. Cash awards totaling $600 are given to the top work selected by the Juror. Talent scholarships and the option for portfolio review and additional scholarships to attend Otterbein are offered to all students who jury into the exhibition.
