Senior to Compete in Olympic Tournament

Senior to Compete in Olympic Tournament

Senior Charles Conwell will compete in the Pathway to Glory Olympic Trials Qualifier Boxing Tournament on October 26-31 in Memphis TN.

If Charles is one of the top finishers in Memphis, he will qualify for the December Olympic Trials in Reno NV.

And, of course, the step after the Olympic Trials would be the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in the summer of 2016!

Charles has been boxing since he was 11 years old and maintains a very rigorous training schedule that includes six days a week of running, jump rope, punching bag, sparing and calisthenics. “It is hard work but it is paying off,” he said. “I like doing it and I love winning.”

His father introduced him to the sport and Charles is coached by both his father, Charles Conwell Sr. and his uncle, Otha Jones. His mother, Annette Conwell is also very instrumental in his success. “I would not be at this level if it was not for my mother,” he said. “She is my PR agent and makes things happen for me.”

In between training and traveling to tournaments, Charles maintains a 3.0 GPA. He is in the AVID (Advancement Via Individual Advancement) program and appreciates the support and encouragement that he receives from Mrs. Pompei and the other AVID teachers. “They really work with us and help us get ready for college,” he said. His favorite classes are AVID and Probability/Statistics.
