Nov. 6, 2015 -- Senior Charles Conwell competed in the Olympic Trials Qualifying Boxing Tournament in late October and won six matches to earn a place in the Olympic Trials in Reno Nevada, December 5-12.

Nov. 13 UPDATE: Charles will be featured on the Channel 3, 7 p.m. news.

The top two boxers from Reno will represent the US to the 2016 Summer Olympics in Brazil.

Olympic boxing matches consist of three, three minute rounds.

Charles competes in the 165 weight class and at the qualifying tournament, he won all six qualifying matches unanimously, based on judges decisions.

To cap off his preparation for the Olympic trials, Charles will spend two weeks of focused training in Reno before the event.

“We run 3-5 miles after breakfast, then lift weights and do calisthenics,” he said. “Then in the afternoon we work the bags, spar and jump rope,” The evenings are spent reviewing film of the young Olympic hopefuls and professional boxers.

“We are always working to learn and improve,” he continued.

If Charles finishes in the top two in Reno, he will spend several months at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, preparing to wear the red, white and blue on the US Olympic Team.

Charles would like to have his family join him for the Olympic Trials in Reno, but the cost of the travel may prevent family members from making the trip.

Donations to A Go Fund Me account will help Charles have a family support system at the tournament.
