Board of Education Meeting Summary - May 9, 2024

May 15, 2024 -- At the monthly regular Board of Education meeting on May 9, the Board and Superintendent Kirby recognized the graduating members of the Superintendent’s Cadre, Monticello Middle School’s PBIS initiatives were highlighted, and the Board approved eight teachers to receive tenure.

Meeting Overview
  • Heights High School seniors Karim Azzam, Nia Baker, Margo Burke, and Dashara Turner delivered the Superintendent’s Student Cadre Report, sharing updates on Heights High news and personal reflections on their time in CH-UH schools.
  • The Board voted to approve Continuing Contract Status, also known as tenure, for the following eight teachers. These educators will be honored at the Staff Awards on May 24.
    • Julie Dempsey - Intervention Specialist, Heights High School    
    • Rachel Elliott - PE/Health Teacher, Heights High School    
    • Kelly Hoffman - Science Teacher, Heights High School
    • Dr. Shu Hui Lin - Chinese/EL Teacher, Heights High School    
    • Caroline Lorimer - Art Teacher, Heights High School
    • Natalie Mortimer - Second Grade Teacher, Fairfax Elementary School
    • Deborah Rowinski - Media Specialist, Roxboro Middle School

  • Superintendent Kirby shared updates on the past month’s work within the five goals of the District’s Strategic Plan. Also part of the Superintendent’s Report:
    • Each month, the District showcases a school's PBIS initiatives through a short video. PBIS, or Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports, is an important part of CH-UH Schools’ climate and culture. The PBIS School Spotlight for May is Monticello Middle School.
  • Board member Gabe Crenshaw moved that, by the regular meeting on June 4, the Superintendent will define the process and the Treasurer will identify the cost implications for the consideration of renaming Monticello Middle School. After discussion, the Board passed the motion.
  • Chief Financial Officer Scott Gainer delivered his “3 Things” report, a monthly initiative to educate the community on school funding. The 3 Things for May were:
