Monticello and Roxboro Middle Schools have been serving the citizens of Cleveland Heights and University Heights since the 1920s. The schools are located in Cleveland Heights and educate students in grade 6-8. The two middle schools have been temporarily moved into the Wiley campus, in University Heights, while both buildings are being renovated as part of the District's master facilities plan. We will continue to operate as separate schools to meet state assessment and IB programming requirements. However, we are working to create a common middle school program as "Heights Middle School" so that when we return to our home sites students will have a similar educational experience. One tangible example of our desire to create a common middle school program is that we are now both authorized International Baccalaureate World Schools.
The middle school program provides students with a broad liberal arts style program of study so students can develop interests in a range of academic fields. We have award winning vocal and instrumental programs as well as an extensive visual arts program. Students study either Spanish or Mandarin so they can develop the skills they will need to communicate to a broader world audience. Every student on the Heights Middle School Campus has access to a Chromebook and Google products in each class. Technology is used for our student's academic coursework during the school day so they can integrate multi-media production into their studies, and Google products allow students to work from home when necessary.
Our middle school serves a range of students with special needs. We have a well-developed gifted program, called the Middle School Scholars Program, that serves students in the 6th and 7th grade. Our special needs program also serves students on IEPs and 504 plans as we currently support students that have been identified as SLD, MH, ED, CD or AU. Our school's goal is to create an inclusive academic program where students receive classroom supports with their general education peers.
Heights Middle School Staff members realize that some of the best opportunities to learn happen outside of the classroom. Besides grade level field trips to local learning institutions, we also offer a number of club and sport programs. Students in the 7th and 8th grade can participate on our athletic program that competes in 15 sports. We also offer a number of academic clubs such as mug club, the environmental club, robotics, art club and many more.
