About Canterbury Elementary

Canterbury Elementary

Have you visited your neighborhood school lately? You might be surprised. As you walk through the doors of Canterbury Elementary, you will find an atmosphere and attitude of achievement that permeates the school. It's a whole new experience!

Canterbury School is one of seven elementary schools in the Cleveland Heights-University Heights School District and houses approximately 370 students from diverse backgrounds in kindergarten through fifth grade. Many Canterbury families have lived in the surrounding neighborhoods for years and are proud to send their children to our school. The staff is committed and caring and works hard to ensure that every student's needs are met in order for them to be successful academically and socially! We teach students to take care of themselves, each other and our world.

Canterbury is an authorized International Baccalaureate School. The IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) is a trans-disciplinary program of international education for children aged 3 to 12 years. It focuses on the total growth of the developing child, touching hearts as well as minds and encompassing social, physical, emotional and cultural needs in addition to academic development. Students will also explore the humanities and arts as an integral part of their development. We will introduce Spanish as our World Language in the near future.

Our district goal is to have all students reading at or above grade level by the end of third grade. To achieve that goal, students are performance grouped for ELA and taught at their instructional level in First through Fifth grade. Students approaching grade level are placed in a small group with a teacher trained to focus on strengthening the foundational skills that are essential to reading. The on grade level students receive reinforcement and the above grade level students' experience is structured to create more challenging work. Our Tigers at all levels experience engaging literature, relevant projects, and a rigorous curriculum. All of our ELA teachers integrate social studies into ELA.

Canterbury is proud to be one of only two schools selected to pilot a new math program called "Math Expressions." Math Expressions uses objects, drawings, and real-world situations to help students build mathematical ideas that make sense to them. Canterbury hold an annual Science Fair, however students study and apply the scientific process all year.

Our PTA is involved and passionate about serving our students. They sponsor many family and parent activities throughout the school year: Ice Cream Social, Family Fun Nights, Waffles for Women, Muffins for Men, Sweetheart Dance, and the Spring Fling. The PTA offers a variety of after school enrichment activities for our students. In the past we have offered Chess Club, Martial Arts, Spanish, Drama Smarts, Yoga, Golf.

Our school partners with FAST, Family Connections, Ursuline College, LINKS and Church of the Reedemer. In addition, we offer curriculum and service based activities throughout the year- Furry Friends' Fundraiser, Bike Rodeo, Book Character Celebration, Chill Out and Read, Pennies for Patients, Spelling Bee, Canterbury Science Fair and multiple musical performances.

We are an energetic school full of life and vitality! We are confident that our enthusiasm, high standards, and commitment to educational excellence will be reflected in the actions and achievements of our Canterbury Tigers.
